The Island of Spinnalonga, Crete. From the 19th Century until the mid 50's this island was Crete's Leper Colony. It's story is beautifully told by Victoria Hislop in her book, "The Island". Not my normal style of literature but I was totally engrossed & having read the book before the visit, it made the latter so much more poigniant.
