Timanfaya. In volcanic terms, a relatively recent geological feature. Approx a quarter of the island is covered by volcanic rock from eruptions over a 6 year periond early in 18th Centrury. Whilst there have been no eruptions since the 19th Century, still fairly hot here with temperatures of over 600 deg. C 13 metres from the surface & over 200 just a few centimetres below, as deonstrated here.

Park rangers party piece at Timanfaya. After making sure all visitors are standing well back, chuck a small can of water down the geyser hole & stand back. 30 seconds later, this happens!

Largo Verde bay, volcanic rock beach. Largo Verde is a half-moon-shaped striking green lagoon filled with volcanic minerals and micro-organisms that are believed to be unique in this lake (and the reason for the green colour in the water).

Jameos Del Agua. Located inside a volcanic tunnel produced by eruptions of the Corona Volcano. Los Jameos is in the section of the tunnel that is closest to the coast. It owes its name to the existence of an interior lake caused by infiltrating sea water. This is an ecologically important area since it's home to a unique and endemic species of squat lobster which are blind & hardly 1 cm in length.

And another sunset! Yes, I'm a sucker for them as the quality of light is second only to that at dawn (ranks behind dawn as it's been "dirtied" by the process of the day, compared to early morning light). Faro Park again, Lanzarote.

Here's a great example of the quality of late in the day light. See how rich the scrub vegitation look & the kisses of golden light on the rocks?

Rocks, scrub vegitation, oh, and a couple of bars. Perfect place to chill out after some serious photography!!
  • collage image title

And another one! Always better if you can get the sun behind a cloud or just below the horizon since most cameras are unable to cope with the dynamic range in these types of shot from brightest to darkest areas. Still some "blowing out" here but effect much reduced by the presence of the clouds, which also make the shot much more atmospheric.

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. This is a long exposure shot, created by using two filters; a "Graduated Neutral Density" to balance the sky & land, coupled with an extreme " Neutral Density" filter to extend the shutter speed by 10 times & create the cloud motion seen here. For the techi's, this was a 68 second exposure with the filter. Without it, the shot would have been about 1/15th second
